We get asked this question a lot here at Bubba Bear. We understand that it’s easy to feel anxious when preparing to wean your little one, especially if its your first. As we become more aware of the dangers of using plastic, we’re all starting to use alternative materials in our everyday life.

Is bamboo dinnerware toxic? Do bamboo plates contain melamine?

Weaning your little one is no different, as there are now so many options for tableware products that don’t require the same chemicals in their production as plastic does. That said, with new products come new concerns & questions. For example, there are weaning products available which contain melamine, a chemical compound that acts as a binder for bamboo fibre. This often looks & feels harder than plastic, but still lighter than ceramic. It’s often made with different colours & patterns, hence why its popular for children’s tableware. However, new research is showing that low dose exposure to melamine is neurotoxic and changes how hormones work in the body (1). This is particularly dangerous for babies & toddlers since their brains & bodies are still developing.

Are bamboo dishes safe? What are bamboo plates made of?

Our bamboo plates are very different to the bamboo fibre products you’ll find elsewhere. We use only organic bamboo; 100% sustainable whilst offering natural antibacterial properties. Every product in our bamboo range, including our bamboo weaning set, is made with only food grade materials that are environmentally friendly, non toxic and ethically made.

After spending several months researching suppliers for our range of bamboo tableware, we decided on a specific factory in China who grow organic bamboo, which is then tested to pass both FDA & LFGB regulations. As a result, you can be assured that our bamboo products are free from BPA, Phthalates and other harmful toxins.

Not only are our bamboo products safe for baby weaning, but they’re also a safe option for their future. Bamboo is one of the world’s most abundant & sustainable natural resources. As a grass plant, it can be grown without the need for harmful pesticides or use as much water. Bamboo also works to reduce CO2 emissions, rebuild eroded soil and produce 30% more oxygen than the equivalent area of trees.

We are pleased to offer a full range of bamboo tableware here at Bubba Bear; our weaning set is a very popular option for parents looking to use bamboo for weaning their little one. You should also check out our unicorn, tractor and bear plates and spoon sets for even more weaning options.
